(also: sazara, zasara)

serpentine rattle; also known as bin-sasara; made of small blocks of wood held together with twine, and when rocked back and forth, sounds somewhat like falling dominoes; originally, the Buddhist sasara used 108 blocks (one for each type of greed), but now they are made of all different sizes and numbers of blocks (a friend even made one of plastic cassette tape cases); some places sell them as “kokiriko” (which I think is inaccurate).
