East Coast Taiko Conference 2017

Last weekend, I was at the 2017 East Coast Taiko Conference at Brown University. As has been the case at every ECTC since 2012, I was running around all weekend taking photos! After editing what ended up being 3,527 photos between myself and one other photographer, I have uploaded selections from the weekend to the TaikoSource Facebook page. Visit the following links to check them out!

Day 1 – Friday, February 17

Day 2 – Saturday, February 18 – part 1

Day 2 – Saturday, February 18 – part 2: Concert

Day 3 – Sunday, February 19

2016 Taiko Census

The Taiko Community Alliance is holding the 2016 Taiko Census in an attempt to learn more about the taiko community. The information gained during the census will be used to learn more about the state of the art form – who is playing taiko, where they are playing, etc. – as well as identify community needs.

Please visit the Census website to learn more about the Census and to participate!

Spotlight: Mykky & Taiko-kun

In this week’s Taiko News post, we spotlight the work of Kamille Mykky Franchomme. You’ll find her at conferences like the North American Taiko Conference and the World Taiko Gathering selling her Taiko-kun and Taiko-chan plush dolls and other creations.

I picked up my own Taiko-kun at WTG this past summer:

Visit her Etsy page to purchase not only Taiko-kun and Taiko-chan, but also many other taiko goods!

YouTube Spotlight: TaikoWorld (Walter Tsushima)

For today’s Taiko News post, I wished to highlight the YouTube account of Walter Tsushima, posting under the banner of his website TaikoWorld.

On his Youtube channel, Walter posts many videos offering interesting glimpses into the life of a taiko player and instructor in Japan – for example, today he posted a video about taiko-related snacks!

Follow this link to check out Walter’s YouTube channel, then head over to TaikoWorld to check out a number of articles Walter has written about learning and playing taiko.

TCA Drum-Building Workshop

The Taiko Community Alliance is hosting an online Drum-Building Workshop on Saturday, June 21 at 1 PM Eastern/10 AM Pacific. Lead by Stuart Paton of Burlington Taiko, the workshop detail how to build your own practice taiko.

And if you’re interested in making your own drum just like the one Stuart will be building, you can purchase a practice drum kit from the TCA to be sent to your house!

For more information, including details about the kit and purchase costs, visit the workshop announcement.

Also, as an aside, this workshop will be a nice lead-in to the next major TaikoSource initiative about the building and purchasing of drums. Stay tuned for more information!
